River Boat Cruises Are Luxurious Adventures

By Laura Gallagher

When you first think about river boat cruises of mainland Europe the most obvious cruise is one down the river Rhine. The cruise down this river will take in the cities of Amsterdam, Cologne, the former West German capital of Bonn, and will flow onto such historic cities as Prague and Venice.

These boats are usually regarded as travelling hotels and are extremely luxurious. However the accommodation is usually limited to approximately 200, therefore combining the feeling of luxury and companionship. Even if you are travelling alone, you are bound to develop new friendships as you discover the hidden gems on the banks of this River.

The usual starting point for these cruises is the Dutch city of Amsterdam. In itself a fantastic tourist attraction as it is full of museums and historic buildings. These are all encompassed by a network of canals, which are well worth cruising along to see the city from a different angle. While there you should also take the opportunity to visit the house where Anna Frank wrote her diaries during World War II.

It is very likely that the Rhine cruise will take in the German cities of Cologne and Bonn. Cologne is home to probably the most architecturally stunning cathedrals in mainland Europe, whereas Bonn used to be the capital of West Germany. The new capital of Germany is Berlin, and has been so since the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Prague is also a popular destination on cruises of this type. It is attracting a lot of visitors due to the history of the city and the diverse cultures within. When Czechoslovakia was divided, Prague became the capital of the Czech Republic.

river boat cruises of Europe visit non-traditional tourist attractions, however they are usually full of interesting landmarks that you would normally not get to see in a typical vacation. These cruises give you the opportunity to disembark and visit certain areas more closely, whereas others you will be able to view as you sail slowly past. A very luxurious way to visit Europe.
