Holiday Eating - How to Eat Healthily

By Steve Alexander

When you're on holiday, it doesn't matter where you're going, as there are many ways to eat healthily. Just because you're away from home doesn't mean you have to stuff your face with junk food. Many hotel deals are available too so it's easier than ever to try tasty, yet healthy food on holiday.

Morocco is a great choice if you're on the lookout for a healthy holiday. Cooked simply and with spice, the cuisine in the country is all all about fresh, healthy ingredients. Simmered in a broth flavoured with aniseed, liquorice root, thyme, mint, pepper and orange peel, even snails are cooked healthily cooked here. If you're on a diet though, there are still a few culinary pitfalls you may want to avoid.

When you're ordering an evening drink, resist the temptation to nibble on nuts and opt for a few olives instead. Fill up on the hot and cold salads that are served at the start of main meals, then enjoy a smaller portion of tasty, but sometimes fatty, tagine. Look out for main dishes based around chicken or vegetables rather than beef or lamb - it's an easy way to cut down on fat.

You'll soon develop a taste for delicious, refreshing mint tea - enjoy it with your meals rather than alcohol or sugary soft drinks. Traditional Moroccan etiquette dictates that food is eaten with the hands, using pieces of bread instead of knives and forks. But that edible cutlery is packed with calories, so you may want to eat your meals the Western way!

Based around bold flavours and the fisherman's catch, the simple, rustic cuisine of Malta is naturally low in calories, so the island is a great choice of holiday destination if you're watching your weight. Pastry is popular here though, so beware of dishes like lampuki, timpana and pastizzi as these all involve sweet and savoury fillings encased in pastry. Instead, try bragoli, parcels of mince, eggs, breadcrumbs and parsley encased in a thin sheet of beef or opt for stewed and stuffed protein-rich dishes like stuffed octopus, squid and cuttlefish served in a spicy tomato sauce.
