Insure you travel smart when pregnant

By Paul Godin

Taking a holiday before the arrival of your baby, which makes travel troublesome, if not actually impossible, could appear like a great idea. So long as your gestation is progressing in an ordinary fashion with no problems, flight travel is in general safe. Traveling abroad when pregnant does have some issues.

Vaccinations, flight limitations for expectant women and the level of care that infirmaries in a foreign country can supply are all points to consider.

The second trimester is the safest time to go, but you will have to make sure your return flight will not go into the 3rd trimester when travel limitations and insurance issues may be a problem.

While you should not fly without insurance, travelling while pregnant requires more diligence when reading the pregnancy travel cover.

Coverage is dependent on what stage of pregnancy you are in, and some travel firms will exclude coverage for any issues in relation to the pregnancy. Even with exclusions, you'll still want to opt for travel insurance to be sure you are covered in case of cancellations or lost luggage.

Get a medical check-up from your GP before your flight, and if traveling late in your pregnancy, get written proof that you're healthy enough for air travel. Ensure you have your well-being records, emergency contact information and evidence of your pregnancy travel insurance.

Make your flight as comfortable as practical by reserving an aisle seat to give yourself sufficient room. Drink plenty of fluids during the flight to cancel out the lack of humidity in the cabin of the plane, and move around if possible during the flight for correct circulation.

Avoiding travel after the 28th week of the pregnancy is sensible since most firms won't supply pregnancy travel insurance during the last stages of the pregnancy. Dependent on where you are visiting, the amount of care might not be acceptable if complications should arise like early work.

If you've got to travel late in the pregnancy, you may be able to obtain an insurance plan written specially for you, if travel insurance for expectant mothers isn't available.
